Wisdom Tooth Discomfort – Is Extraction Necessary?

Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars, which typically emerge between ages 17 and 25. In some cases, people can experience oral health issues including pain and discomfort, overcrowding, impaction, and an increased infection risk. Whilst it is not always mandatory to remove the wisdom teeth, around half of the population will need at least one wisdom tooth extraction at some point in their lives to avoid future issues. In this blog post, Glowing Smiles Dental will be shedding some light on wisdom teeth removal and when extraction may be necessary.

When is it advisable to have a wisdom teeth assessment?

Wisdom teeth can erupt at any time between the age of 17 and 25, and most people have their first wisdom teeth assessment between ages 15 and 19. Regular yearly check-ups are advisable, as this will allow your dentist to monitor the status of your wisdom teeth and overall oral health. Early assessment is crucial, as postponing removal can result in additional complexities later in life.

Common Reasons for Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Extracting wisdom teeth is a routine procedure for dentists around the world, and it is often done for these common reasons:

  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth – when the molars are unable to emerge properly through the gums, they may grow at an angle or lack space. This can result in symptoms such as swollen gums, bad breath, jaw discomfort and pain while opening the mouth.
  • Insufficient Space – Overcrowding from wisdom teeth eruption can cause pain and harm neighbouring teeth due to inability to fully clean around the tooth. Decay of wisdom tooth and neighbouring teeth could result.
  • Pain – Pain which does not subside should not be dismissed. This could indicate an issue with the eruption of your wisdom teeth. Consult your dentist, who will be able to examine your wisdom teeth and take X-rays to rule out any issues.
  • Infection – Cleaning wisdom teeth can be a challenge, which makes them susceptible to infection. In cases of severe infection, extraction may be necessary. Maintaining proper oral hygiene is essential to reduce infection risk, so don’t forget to brush twice daily, floss once daily and pay particularly close attention to the third molars.

Signs Indicating Wisdom Teeth Extraction Could be Necessary

Whilst your dentist is best placed to advise you on whether or not wisdom teeth extraction is necessary, the following symptoms could indicate a need for removal.

  • Pain and sensitivity at the rear of the mouth
  • Gum inflammation
  • Unpleasant breath or unusual taste in the mouth
  • Persistent jaw stiffness or pain
  • Sinus issues including pressure, headache, pain or congestion

The Wisdom Tooth Extraction Process

In most cases, wisdom tooth extraction is a straightforward and uncomplicated process.  Unusual positioning of the wisdom teeth may pose minor challenges, however you will be provided with a comprehensive explanation of the procedure by your dentist. Local anaesthetic will be used to numb the area and minimize discomfort, and you may also be given the option for general anaesthetic. The duration of the procedure can be anywhere from 1-3 hours based on the positioning and number of teeth to be removed.
