Sensitive Teeth – Managing the Discomfort

If you’re one of the millions of people around the world who experience tooth sensitivity, you may be wondering how you can get some relief. Tooth sensitivity has a variety of potential triggers, and symptoms manifest in the form of sharp pain or discomfort which is usually temporary in duration. Some of the most common triggers include exposure to hot/cold temperatures, consumption of sweet/acidic foods and even brushing and flossing. Having sensitive teeth can adversely affect your quality of life, making simple activities such as enjoying your favourite food and beverages a painful experience. In this blog post, Glowing Smiles Dental will be sharing some insight into the causes of tooth sensitivity, along with some tips on how you can manage your symptoms and maintain a healthy, pain-free smile.

Understanding Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is by no means uncommon, with people of all ages experiencing this issue at some point in their lives. Sensitivity occurs when the dentin of the tooth has been exposed, usually due to loss of protective enamel or damage to the tooth. Enamel is a remarkably strong protective layer which helps to safeguard against sensitivity, allowing us to enjoy hot/cold food and drinks without pain. Repeated acid attacks, presence of gum disease, aggressive brushing and a history of bruxism (tooth grinding) can damage enamel, which may lead to exposure of the dentin. This in turn can result in individuals experiencing intermittent or chronic tooth pain and sensitivity when exposed to certain stimuli.

Management Strategies for Tooth Sensitivity

Managing tooth sensitivity requires a considered approach, with a focus on immediate relief and long-term prevention. There are a range of strategies you may wish to consider, including:

1. Use of Desensitising Toothpaste

There are a range of toothpastes available which are specifically formulated for those with sensitive teeth. These toothpastes contain specific ingredients such as potassium nitrate and stannous fluoride which help to form a protective barrier in place of the worn enamel, providing protection to the exposed dentin and nerves. They can also help to soothe the nerves, which in turn may reduce pain when exposed to stimuli.

2. Evaluate Your Brushing Technique

If you have sensitive teeth, it is best to use a soft bristle toothbrush whilst ensuring you maintain a gentle brushing technique. Aggressive brushing is a leading trigger for tooth sensitivity and other dental issues, as this can damage tooth enamel and irritate gums. Try to use small, circular motions rather than aggressive scrubbing. Your dentist can also demonstrate proper brushing technique during your next check-up.

3. Use of Fluoride Mouthwash

Fluoride helps to strengthen enamel, and it is a good idea to use a fluoridated mouthwash after brushing and flossing. Not only will this help to protect your teeth against sensitivity, but it can also help to reduce your risk of experiencing tooth decay.

4. Limit Consumption of Acidic/Sugary Foods

Soft drink, citrus fruits, sports drinks and lollies contain vast amounts of acids and sugars which erode enamel and increase the risk of tooth decay and sensitivity. It is best to limit your consumption, and always drink a glass of water to help wash away any sugar or acidic residue left behind following consumption.

5. Custom Guards

If you have a history of teeth grinding (bruxism), you should speak to your dentist about getting a custom guard. This is typically worn whilst sleeping, and will help to limit the wear and tear on your teeth caused by this habit.

Prevention is Key!

When it comes to tooth sensitivity, prevention is key. The best way to avoid experiencing this issue is by maintaining a good oral hygiene routine, visiting your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and being mindful of what you eat/drink. Attending regular check-ups will also ensure that potential underlying issues such as gum disease, tooth decay or damage to the teeth are identified and treated in the early stages.
